Theatre Review
I stepped through the wardrobe into a fabulous theatre this weekend to experience The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Situated in the heart of Nottingham, the Theatre Royal is one of the UK’s most vibrant and thriving touring venues, leading the way for arts and entertainment.
Since it first opened its doors in 1865, the Theatre Royal has survived the reign of six monarchs, two World Wars, seen the dawn of cinema, radio and television and is still a vital and much-cherished part of the City. They have an online digital archive to celebrate this rich history, www.ourtheatreroyal.org which now has over 1,000 items to view. It’s a beautiful venue and full of historical charm. I sat centrally in the stalls, had a great view of the stage, and gazed upwards at the cast decoration and lighting all around me.
Based on C S Lewis’ classic book The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe UK Tour brought the world of Narnia to life following successful seasons in London. I joined Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter as they waved goodbye to wartime Britain and embarked on the most magical of adventures in a frozen, faraway land where they met the noble king of Narnia, Aslan, and the coldest, most evil of all, The White Witch. The White Witch had fantastic costumes and was convincingly performed by Samantha Womack.
The talking Beavers lightened the drama and certainly made me laugh out loud. Lucy (Karise Yansen) drew me into the story and held the audience’s attention. It’s been a long time since I read the book and it felt like I had been taken back to those memories and childhood imagination.
It was packed full of live music and clever use of props; I especially liked the train carriages made from suitcases that came to life through dance. The production was well thought through and executed, they provided sign language interpretation to be as inclusive as possible.
I enjoyed the pure escapism of this Hunts Coaches Day trip. Sitting back, relaxing and being dropped off right outside the theatre. I had time to do a bit of shopping and enjoy tapas at the Magic Garden. I certainly made a treasured travel memory.
